Theraplay

Who?

Theraplay is an evidence-based therapeutic intervention for children, ages 0-12, who struggle with emotional or behavioral challenges and their caregiver(s).

Theraplay may help when:

  • A child has experienced a disruption in their relationship with a significant caregiver due to, but not limited to, any of the following issues: violence in the home or community; caregiver substance use/abuse; sexual abuse; placement in foster care; divorce; separation; or loss
  • Children show difficult behavior or struggle with emotions
  • Children have a change in placement or caregivers
  • Family members have physical health or mental health difficulties
  • A caregiver would like help with improving their relationship with their child.

How?

In Theraplay, the therapist guides the caregiver and the child through playful, fun games, developmentally challenging activities, and nurturing activities. The act of engaging each other in this way helps the caregiver regulate the child’s emotions and behavior while communicating love, delight, joy, and safety to the child. These interactions help the child experience safety, care, and connection improving their functioning and relationships overall.
